To count poker chips, sort them by colour, stack each colour in piles of 20, then multiply: piles × 20 × the chip value gives you each colour's worth, and the sum is your stack total. With standard home-game values (white = $1, red = $5, green = $25, black = $100), a full 20-chip stack of reds is $100 and a stack of greens is $500. How to count poker chips fast
- 1. Sort by colour. Never count a mixed pile. Separate the stack into one pile per denomination first — it turns one error-prone count into several trivial ones.
- 2. Stack in piles of 20. Casinos cut stacks of 20 for a reason: they're fast to eyeball and easy to verify side by side. Equal-height piles of the same colour are self-checking.
- 3. Multiply, don't tally. Piles × 20 × chip value per colour, then add the leftovers. Or skip the arithmetic: type the counts into the counter above and read the total.
- 4. Cross-check against buy-ins. At the end of a cash game, all chips on the table must equal all money that bought in. Use the bank check above — if it's short, a stack was miscounted or chips walked off.
